Around the Classes - Week 5 Recap

6A

Washburn Rural scored 32 second quarter points in blowing out Topeka Highland Park 60-20. The Junior Blues scored 46 straight points in all after the Scots took a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Rural offense racked up 478 yards of total offense including 356 on the ground, in improving to 4-1.

In a battle between two of the state’s best running backs, Demarcus Robinson went off for 274 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries as Wichita Northwest beat Wichita Southeast 33-19. Southeast’s Joseph Randle was limited to 71 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. The Grizzlies capitalized on six Golden Buffalo turnovers.

Garden City used a strong defense to earn a 15-13 road win over Liberal. The Buffaloes held the Redskins to just 28 yards rushing on the game, while racking up 173 yards on the ground themselves. QB Cody Bernbeck rushed for 117 yards and threw for 211 yards in the win. The win propels Garden City to 4-1, while Liberal fell to 1-4.

Brooks Smith scored on an 11-yard first-quarter touchdown run on his only carry of the game and the Olathe East defense made it stand up in a 7-0 win over Olathe Northwest. The Hawks rushed for 237 yards including 168 from Brandon Willingham.

6A Class Notes – Overall, 6A teams are 80-80 (.500) through the first five weeks, including 27-29 (.482) against 5A schools, and 4-3 (.571) against 4A schools. The west side (41-39, .513) has been two games better than the east (39-41, .488) thus far, however the east holds a 2-1 advantage in head-to-head contests.


5A

The Ottawa Cyclones broke a 33 game losing streak with an 18-7 win over Frontier League rival Baldwin on Friday night. The Cyclones have been much more competitive this season under second year head coach Marc Bergan. Quarterback Corbin Goedert threw three touchdown passes, two to Dustin Burnett, as the Cyclones overcame a 7-0 deficit to ruin Baldwin’s homecoming.

Hays High is a surprising Western Athletic Conference leader with a 5-0 record following a 40-14 pounding of Wichita South Friday. The Indians were without two of their top backfield players, senior Travis Pfannenstiel and junior Casey Sedbrook, but senior quarterback Bryant Bombardier helped the offense pile up 383 yards in the win. Friday, Hays travels to play a 4-1 Dodge City team still reeling from a one-point upset at the hands of Great Bend.

Emporia scored 19 points in the final 7:40 of the game to get by Topeka Seaman 33-19. Spartan running back Mark Kolmer rushed for 140 yards on 37 carries and three late touchdowns to provide separation from the Vikings. The win improves Emporia to 4-1, and sets up an all-important Centennial League match-up with undefeated Manhattan in week six.

The Great Bend Panthers pulled off their second straight dramatic victory with a 28-27 win over previously unbeaten Dodge City in front of a packed homecoming crowd. The Red Demons led 27-7 at the half, but a Jordan Basye punt block with 12:16 left to play was caught in the end zone by Brett McManaman to make it 27-21. Great Bend completed the comeback in thrilling fashion when Dakota Ellis blocked yet another punt and Basye returned it 26-yards to help give the Panthers the lead. Allan Holt sealed the victory with an interception with less than two minutes to play. Dodge City QB Ty Thomas entered the game with 10 touchdowns and no picks but was intercepted three times by Great Bend. The Red Demons played without star running back Jace Banner who was serving a one-game suspension.

5A Class Notes -- Overall, 5A teams are 84-77 (.522) through the first five weeks, including 29-27 (.518) against 6A schools, 22-22 (.500) against 4A schools, 1-0 against Oklahoma schools, and 6-2 against Missouri schools. The west half of 5A is 49-31 (.613), while the east is just 35-46 (.432). The West holds a 3-1 advantage in head-to-head contests.


4A

In a back and forth game, Abilene forced two late turnovers and held off previously unbeaten and 3A ranked Marysville 35-28. The Cowboys drove 71 yards in the final 33 seconds of the first half resulting in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Nick Rice to Curry Sexton to break a 21-21 tie. Abilene would take a 35-21 lead in the third quarter behind a Dakota Hoekman 8-yard score before the Bulldogs would answer to pull the game within a touchdown. That’s when the Cowboy defense recovered a fumble and intercepted Marysville Quarterback Ben Malotte to seal the win.

Colby won their fourth straight with a 22-14 win over Phillipsburg Friday to improve to 4-1 on the season. After Phillipsburg took a 6-0 halftime lead the Eagles scored 22 points in the second half to secure a come-from-behind victory over the Panthers for the second year in a row. Kale Arnberger fueled the Eagle attack on the ground and in the air rushing for 127 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and completing 7 of 13 passes for 86 yards. Adam Weber added 56 yards and the other two scores for the Eagles. Colby travels to Smith Center Friday looking to end the Redmen's 72 game winning streak.

Perry-Lecompton scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in holding off Lansing 21-19. Brad Phillips rushed for 92 yards and a touchdowns as the Kaws picked up their first win of the season after reaching the state semifinals last fall.

Osawatomie improved to 5-0 with a 42-34 double overtime win over Wellsville. Trailing 28-20 late in the fourth quarter, the Trojans blocked a Wellsville punt, and scored the game tying touchdown and two-point conversion with under 30 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 28. Both teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, but neither could convert the point after. The Trojans scored first in the second OT, and stopped Wellsville on fourth-and-goal from the five for the thrilling win.

Chanute made a strong case for the SEK League title by beating previously unbeaten Independence 33-14. The Blue Comets built a 26-14 halftime lead, and limited the Bulldogs’ Matt Bromley to 122 yards on 25 carries in improving to 4-1. Independence (4-1) remains at home to play Columbus (3-2) in week six, while the Comets travel to Coffeyville (3-2).

4A Class Notes -- Overall, 4A teams are 163-157 (.509) through five weeks including 3-4 against 6A schools, 22-22 (.500) against 5A schools, 43-38 (.531) against 3A schools, and 8-5 (.615) against 2-1A schools. 4A schools are 1-3 against Missouri schools, 1-0 against Oklahoma schools, and 0-1 against Arkansas schools. The east half of 4A is 87-73 (.544) thus far, while the west is only 76-84 (.475). Head-to-head, west teams hold a 4-2 advantage in six games against teams from the east.


3A

SE of Saline rushed for 429 yards in blowing past Lyons 42-14. Trenton Collins led the Trojans with 151 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries. Bryant Beneke added 110 yards and two scores and Brant Weaver rushed for 99 yards as the Trojans improved to 5-0.

Hutch Trinity forced Ell Saline standout QB Tate Omli into just 13 of 37 passing and two interceptions as the Celtics dominated the previously unbeaten Cardinals, 34-0. Trinity QB Derek Racette threw for 157 yards and a touchdown while adding two scores on the ground as the Celtics remained undefeated.

Lucas Westervelt caught a 38-yard Ty Rowe touchdown pass with just under four minutes to play as Baxter Springs stayed unbeaten in CNC League play by upsetting Girard 27-26 on the Trojans’ homecoming. Rowe finished 18 of 28 for 268 yards and four touchdowns on the night for the Lions. Much of the damage went to Tyler Underhill who caught 10 balls for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Underhill finally drew a double-team on the Lions last drive, which left Westervelt one-on-one for the game winning score.

The Galena Bulldogs allowed red-hot QB Jacoby Martin rest his arm for the most part by racking up 348 yards rushing in shutting out traditional power Frontenac 55-0. Martin did finish 5 of 9 passing for 86 yards and two scores, but his classmate Troy Albright led the Bulldog offense with 142 yards rushing on just seven carries.

A surprising Ness City-Dighton Titans team is making the most of its last year of a cooperative agreement rolling to a 5-0 record this season. The Titans have scored at least 33 points in each of their five wins including 69, 58 and 56 in their last three. Titan sophomore Guy Fullmer, a 5-10, 170 pound running back, rushed for a whopping 331 yards on 27 carries in Friday's 56-20 win over Leoti-Wichita County. The Titans will face their toughest test to date Friday as they host 4-1 LaCrosse.

3A Class Notes -- Overall, 3A teams are 179-140 (.561) through five weeks including 38-43 (.469) against 4A schools, and 86-44 (.662) against 2-1A schools. 3A schools are 1-0 against Missouri schools and 1-0 against Arkansas schools. The west half continues to show its strength with a 96-64 (.600) record thus far, while the east half of 3A is a solid 83-76 (.522). Head-to-head, west teams have a 4-3 record against teams from the east.


2-1A

Wathena senior Bryce Paden rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries as the Wildcats edged Oskaloosa 20-14 in overtime. Paden scored on runs of 90 and 48 yards in the first half, but was matched by Oskaloosa’s Brandon Barnes two second half touchdown runs before pushing across from six yards out in overtime.

Trailing 14-12 with nine seconds left, Valley Heights scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Cody Trimble to Chase Blackburn on fourth-and-goal to knock off Washington 18-14. It was the second time the Trimble to Blackburn scoring connection struck in the fourth quarter. The win improves Valley Heights to 4-1, while Washington falls to 3-2.

Bennington handed Moundridge their third close loss of the season, 32-24, as the Wildcats fell to 1-4. Bennington scored 20 unanswered points in the second half after Moundridge had taken a 24-12 lead. The Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season behind 198 yards and four touchdowns from Brian Gellinger. Moundridge was led by Lance Loganbill’s 151 yard rushing effort in the loss.

Meade rallied with two second-half touchdown runs to hold off upstart Elkhart 12-7. The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead into halftime on Marcus Irsik’s first-quarter, 4-yard touchdown run. The Buffaloes would answer as Kellen Hernandez caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Dakota Benear to cut the Wildcat lead to 7-6. Meade would push across the winning score on a 1-yard Albert Davis run with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. Irsik rushed for 141 yards on 27 carries for Elkhart (2-3), while Hernandez led Meade (5-0) with 76 yards on the ground.

Onaga got two second-quarter touchdowns and converted the all-important PATs in a 14-12 win over Troy. Quarterback Jeremy Melvin scored on a 1-yard run, and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Falk to help the Buffaloes improve to 2-3 in long-time Centralia coach Jerry Bainum’s first year.

The Sacred Heart Knights posted their first win of the season 52-0 at winless Republic County in Belleville. The Knights traditionally pass happy offense stayed grounded with 123 yards and two touchdowns by quarterback Jordan Jerkovich. Drew Mai added a punt return for a touchdown for Sacred Heart. In five games this season Republic County has been outscored 284-34 scoring eight points or less in four of five losses.

Damon Trotnic rushed for 158 yards and Nick Billingsley added 135 yards on the ground as surprising Oswego remained unbeaten with a 44-13 drubbing of Three Rivers League rival Uniontown. The Indians (5-0) finished 6-3 last fall, but missed the playoffs. Coach Andy Fewin appears to have turned a program around that has gone just 11-34 over the past five seasons.

2-1A Class Notes -- Overall, 2-1A teams are 106-153 (.409) through five weeks including 5-8 (.385) against 4A schools, and 44-86 (.339) against 3A schools. 2-1A teams are 1-0 against Nebraska teams, 1-2 against Oklahoma teams, 0-2 against Missouri teams, and 0-1 against teams from New Mexico. The east half of 2-1A continues to struggle at 49-81 (.377) with as many winless teams (8) as teams with winning records. The west side has faired better, but is still just 57-72 (.442) thus far. Head-to-head the west holds a 8-4 advantage against the east.


8M-I

Minneola got 168 yards rushing and four touchdowns from Jason McClaren and 149 yards and two scores from Kameron Ptacek as the Wildcats ran past South Gray 52-28. McClaren added two passing touchdowns on the game as the Wildcats improved to 5-0.

Greensburg ran past traditional power Jetmore 64-26 behind a huge rushing night from Nathan Charlton and Cody Headrick. Charlton rushed for 405 yards while Headrick added 206 yards on the ground as the Rangers gashed the Longhorn defense for over 700 yards of total offense. The win gives Greensburg a leg up in an even district that includes 3-2 Macksville and 3-2 Spearville.

Bryan Newton and Dakota Ramsey led a 400 yard rushing effort that propelled Colony Crest past Hartford 54-24. Newton finished with 159 yards and two touchdowns, while Ramsey added 156 yards rushing and three scores. Crest improved to 5-0 in a district which includes two other undefeated teams in Lebo and Madison.

Hill City Quarterback Reggie Jordan rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two more as the Ringnecks easily handled Stockton 52-6. The win was important for Hill City to keep pace in a district featuring Quinter (4-1; 1-0), Triplains-Brewster (3-2; 1-0), and Thunder Ridge (3-2; 1-0). Stockton fell to 2-3 on the year.

In District 4 action, Claflin scored the final 18 points of the game to defeat Canton-Galva 44-34. The Eagles held a 34-26 advantage in the third quarter before the Wildcats started their comeback. Claflin improved to 2-3 overall, and more importantly 2-1 in district play. The Eagles fell to 1-4 and 1-2 in the district. Always a fixture in the playoffs, the Wildcats hopes this year may rest in week six’s game at undefeated Pretty Prairie.

8M-I Class Notes -- Overall, 8M-I teams are 126-118 (.516) after five weeks, including 66-58 (.532) against 8M-II teams. The west half of the bracket has taken over as the tougher thus far going 62-57 (.521), while the east is 64-61 (.512). 8M-I teams are 2-5 against Missouri, 1-0 against Nebraska teams, and 0-2 against Oklahoma teams. Head-to-head, the east and west have won one game a piece.


8M-II

Caldwell’s Braden Lebeda accounted for 649 of his teams 721 total yards as the Blue Jays routed Argonia 76-38 to open district play. Lebeda rushed for 377 yards and five touchdowns, and completed 11 of 19 passes for 272 yards and three more scores. Caldwell scored 24 points in each of the first two quarters to take a 48-26 lead at halftime.

Hope broke open a 14-6 halftime lead as Lucas Bird returned the second half kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown in a 34-12 win over Linn. Aaron Davis completed six passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions improved to 5-0 and set up a Week 6 district showdown with #2 ranked Hanover.

Quivira Heights got 58 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Brandon Jones as the Thunderbirds scored 24 points in the first quarter in getting past South Barber 50-28. QH quarterback Gunner Phelan completed 7 of 11 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown to help the T-birds improve to 3-2. The Chieftains fell to 2-3 on the year.

Moscow rebounded from a two-game losing streak with a 46-point win over Coldwater-South Central, 76-30. The Wildcats scored 22 points each in the third and fourth quarters including two interception returns for touchdowns and a kickoff return for a score. The Wildcats (3-2) continue district play this week in hosting 5-0, #5 ranked Ashland. South Central (1-4) returns home to take on 1-4 Fowler.

Waverly improved to 3-2 by going on the road and outscoring St. Paul, 54-38. The win gives the Bulldogs a leg up on a earning a playoff spot in a district that includes 4-1 Centre-Lost Springs and two winless teams in White City & Elk Valley.

8M-II Class Notes -- Overall, 8M-II teams are 108-121 (.472) after five weeks, including 58-66 (.468) against their big brothers in 8M-I. The east half of the bracket is 53-57 (.482) thus far, while the west is 55-64 (.462). Head-to-head, the west is 7-4 against the east.
