Olathe South racked up 442 yards of total offense, but couldn’t convert it into points in a 15-14 loss to Blue Valley West to open district plan. Falcon Quarterback Tanner Dutton threw for 342 yards, 179 yards to Marquis Addision, but South couldn’t overcome six turnovers. Connor Embree threw two touchdown passes for the Jaguars, but the difference ended up being a second quarter two point conversion pass from Embree to Alex Visk.

Tyler Turner rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns as Maize upset Garden City, 24-20. Buffaloes Quarterback Cody Bernbeck threw for 200 yards, but was intercepted three times as the Eagles got the key district win.

Derby made 17 first half points stand up by holding Oklahoma State bound Joseph Randle in check in a 17-12 win over Wichita Southeast. Randle finished the game with 16 carries for 51 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown for the Golden Buffaloes.

In a bid for their first playoff appearance since 1971, Wichita South forced five Wichita North turnovers in a 35-6 win. DuWayne Kelly rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown and Zack Villarreal added 98 yards and two scores for the Titans.

Emporia ran past Topeka West 46-14 behind Mark Kolmer’s 144 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Brandon Gentz added 107 yards on the ground and three more scores for the Spartans who gashed the Charger defense for 366 rushing yards.

In a rivalry game that doubles as a district opener the Salina South Cougars bested Salina Central with a game-winning 21-yard field goal by senior kicker Derek Harman with four seconds left in the game. South scored 10 points in the game's final five minutes for the victory - the first time the Cougars have won two in a row against Central since 1983. Central's three headed offensive monster again gobbled up yards as Trey Dallas threw for over 200 yards and two TDs, Jesse Wassenberg caught six balls for 172 yards and Cale Sharp rushed for 136 yards, but South's offense was prolific in its own right, racking up 459 yards of total offense in the win.

Hays High continued its amazing streak with a 20-14 win over rival Great Bend in Hays Friday night. The Indians improved to 7-0 under first-year coach Ryan Cornelsen and beat the Panthers for the first time in nine tries while also clinching the WAC title outright with the win. Quarterback Bryant Bombardier was again the spark plug for a workmanlike Indian offense rushing for 58 of the team's 217 rushing yards on 20 carries and the Hays High defense continues to play consistently forcing two Panther fumbles and three interceptions - one returned for a touchdown by junior Casey Sedbrook.

Newton got a fourth quarter touchdown pass from Evan Thomas to Austin Vermillion to escape Winfield with a 17-14 win over the Vikings. Statistically, the Railers and Vikings were almost dead even as both offenses accounted for 240 total yards.

KC Turner got 285 yards and three touchdowns rushing from Rashon Thames on 42 as the Golden Bears beat KC Sumner 28-22 in overtime. Sumner had actually built a 22-6 halftime lead and the Golden Bears needed 10 fourth quarter points to force the extra period. David Bernal scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard run for Turner.

Concordia remains winless under new coach Tim Lambert after losing to Colby 22-12 in Friday's district opener. It marked the fourth time this season the Panthers scored 12 points or less as they fell to 0-7 on the year. Colby's Kale Arnberger completed 4 of 5 passes for 73 yards and scored two of the Eagles' three rushing touchdowns in the win. Andrew Flanagin led the Eagles with 81 yards rushing on 11 carries and also picked up 12 total tackles for the Colby defense.

Hugoton improved to 7-0 with a 21-0 shutout of Pratt in the district opener. Quarterback Zach Dunlap rushed for 115 yards on seven carries and completed an 83-yard touchdown pass to Coltin Ghumm for the game's first touchdown. Caleb Gifford and Kethan Martin scored the other two touchdowns for the Eagles. Pratt's Skylar Angood led the Greenbacks with 65 yards on nine carries in the loss.

An improved Larned team gave Smoky Valley all they could handle Friday, but it still wasn't enough to earn a district victory as the Vikings picked up their third win of the season with a 40-38 squeaker at Larned. The Indians Chase Smith picked up 146 yards on only nine carries as the Indians fell to 2-5 on the season.

Jeremy Grosstephan caught a 29-yard Gannon Bauer touchdown pass with just over three minutes left to propel Girard past Parsons 21-14 in District 7. The Vikings had a chance to tie the game as they reached the 4-yard line with eight seconds left, but Eric Bowman broke up Wes Krull’s fourth down pass to secure the Trojan win.

3A

Senior quarterback Jacob Fish used 256 yards and four touchdowns passing to help the Hillsboro Trojans shock previously unbeaten Southeast of Saline 26-12 in the district opener. Junior wideout Ben Bebermeyer caught eight passes for 121 yards and two scores while Taylor Hagen and Jacob Edwards caught a touchdown pass apiece. Southeast of Saline quarterback Bryant Beneke racked up 226 yards rushing and scored the team's only two touchdowns in the loss, but was only 4 of 11 passing for 27 yards with two interceptions.

Scott Anderson’s extra point scraped over the crossbar in overtime to propel Galena past CNC rival Riverton 21-20 in a game featuring two schools separated by just four miles in Cherokee County. Riverton scored first in overtime on a Matt Tyree touchdown run, but the Bulldogs stopped Tyree short on the two-point conversion try. Galena would get the ball and score in just one play as Cody Clark went around left end leading to Anderson’s winning kick. The Bulldogs had a chance to put the game away late in the fourth quarter driving deep in Ram territory with a 14-6 lead, but Tyree stepped in front of a Jacoby Martin pass and went 82 yards to the house to tie it up and force OT.

Branden Barnes rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as Oskaloosa fell to Pleasant Ridge 36-22. The Rams stayed undefeated behind the legs of Will Ryan and Matt Hager who contributed 164 and 126 yards rushing respectively. This game was dominated on the ground as the Rams ran for 350 yards while the Bears put up 426 yards rushing in the losing effort.

Caney Valley jumped out to a 38-7 halftime lead behind 24 first quarter points as the Bullpups drilled Baxter Springs 61-13. Ty Rowe threw for 245 yards for the Lions, but was intercepted three times as the Bullpups forced five turnovers.

Sedgwick rode Trent Stucky’s 159 yards and two touchdowns and Wade Hansen’s 129 yards and two scores to a 35-14 win over Halstead. The win moves the Cardinals to 6-1, and sets up a showdown with undefeated Hutchinson Trinity next week in Sedgwick.

2-1A

Congratulations to the Wabaunsee Chargers for ending their 40-game losing streak by drilling winless Solomon 59-6. Curtis Capoun returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score, and kept running to the tune of 187 yards and four touchdowns. The win was the first for the Chargers since a 14-7 week two victory over Osage City in 2005. The Gorillas, who fell to 0-7 in their last year in 11-man football, were minus three starters in the game due to illness.

The Sterling Black Bears picked up their second win of the season by beating Moundridge 22-14 in a non-district game Friday night. Matt Foster led Sterling on the ground with 103 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Fast rushed for 106 yards for the struggling Wildcats.

Elkhart picked up their third win of the season with a 14-12 victory over Sublette Friday. The Wildcats scored first on a Marcus Irsik five-yard run, but Sublette answered with 12 second quarter points for the six-point lead at the half. A third quarter Irsik touchdown run would tie the game and he would add the two-point conversion run for the final score as the Larks fell to 4-3 on the season while Elkhart improved to 3-4. Irsik carried the ball 23 times for 68 yards to go with his two touchdowns in the win. Sublette's Mason Hibbard led the Larks with 79 yards on 17 carries.

Despite missing players due to illness, Chase County found enough in the tank to shutout Peabody Burns 42-0. Jesse Cole rushed for 106 yards and Johnny Lang added 97 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldog win. Quarterback Shawn Talkington also had two touchdown runs for Chase County.

Uniontown improved to 3-4 by edging winless Pleasanton 13-6. The win places the Eagles in great position to clinch a playoff spot in District 7 this week with a victory over winless Northeast-Arma.

8M-I

Burlingame got 256 yards and nine touchdowns from Ty Lang as the Bearcats outscored Elwood 90-40. The win kept the Bearcats’ playoff hopes alive, but they’ll likely need a road win over Wakefield and a home upset of Frankfort to get in.

We’ll see Burlingame and Elwood’s 150 combined points and raise you four. Pratt Skyline got 461 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns from Trent Befort as the Thunderbirds slipped by St. John 78-76. Skyline rallied from a 50-42 halftime lead behind Befort who rushed for 391 yards and six touchdowns, caught two passes for 70 yards and two scores, and returned an interception for another.

Landon Hammond rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns as Marmaton Valley ran away from Southern Coffey Co. 60-34. Southern Coffey County Quarterback Ben Spencer threw for 235 yards and three scores in the loss.

Hill City took a big step towards the school’s first ever playoff appearance by winning a 40-38 thriller over Thunder Ridge. After the Longhorns scored as time expired, Hill City’s Luke Owen broke up the two-point conversion pass in the end zone to preserve the win. Ringneck Quarterback Reggie Jordan was terrific in rushing for 247 yards and three touchdowns in holding off the Longhorns.

Minneola held off Tribune-Greeley Co. 42-28 behind Jason McClaren’s 241 yards and four touchdowns. The win puts the unbeaten Wildcats in the driver’s seat for the district title as they face Rolla and Ingalls in the coming weeks.

8M-II

Grinnell-Wheatland put up a great fight, but came up short to Sharon Springs – Wallace Co. 28-20. Logan Stephens rushed for 157 yards for the Thunderhawks in the losing effort, while Taylor Pearce led the Wildcats with 169 yards and all four scores.

The Palco Roosters woke-up in the second quarter of Friday's 28-26 win over Natoma scoring all of their points in the final three quarters of play. The Tigers opened the game with a 14-0 first quarter lead thanks to a team safety and runs of 77 and 42 yards by Mason Angel, but Blake Gehring and Landon Keller would score in the second quarter to pull the Roosters within two at the half. Gehring would add a 25-yard run and a 39-yard pass in the second half and the Roosters would hold the Tigers on two conversion tries to secure the win.

South Barber outscored Chase 58-36 in a key District 5 game that will likely decide the second playoff spot. Both teams have already lost to Quivira Heights in district play, and with each have sub .500 remaining opponents on the schedule.

Axtell continues to build momentum towards another late season run as they dispatched of Linn 50-26. Eagle Quarterback Kevin Ronnebaum threw for 205 yards and three scores, and Tylor Heiman (153) and Taylor Jesse (148) each ran for over 100 yards.

In one of the biggest upsets in the state last Friday the Wilson Dragons jumped to a 38-22 lead in the third quarter and held on for a 46-44 defeat of previously unbeaten Sylvan Unified. The Dragons scored the first 14 points of the game and the Mustangs rallied to tie the game at 14 apiece before making it a 22-22 score as the two teams entered the locker room at the half. The game came down to a missed Mustang two-point conversion in the third quarter. The Mustangs face an undefeated Beloit-St. John's Tipton team Friday in a key district contest.
