KSHSAA Hall of Fame Class of 2024

HALL OF FAME

FIVE SELECTED FOR CLASS OF 2024

 

TOPEKA, Kan. - Five individuals have been selected for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Awards will be presented during 2024 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The time and location of each induction ceremony will be announced at a later date at www.kshsaa.org.

 

The Class of 2024 Hall of Fame inductees include:

 

Jeff Hulse, Rockport, TX – Faculty
Jeff Hulse coached three sports at Olathe East High School, where he established a tradition of exceptional success for the Hawks. Hulse held the title of head coach for softball (17 years), girls tennis (22 years) and girls basketball (14 years). An accomplished coach in all three sports, softball is where Hulse etched his name in history. From 2000-2014 Olathe East softball tallied a record of 332-23 for an outstanding .935 winning percentage. Hulse guided the Hawks to seven 6A KSHSAA State Softball Championships and 13 regional championships. He was selected Kansas Coaches Association Softball Coach of the Year in 2004, 2009, and 2013. Hulse was named Sunflower League Coach of the Year six times, Midwest Sectional Coach of the Year in 2004 by the National Fast-Pitch High School Coaches Association, and in was the 2013 NFSHS Region 5 Coach of the Year. Coach Hulse was named 6A Kanas Tennis Coaches Association Girls Tennis Coach of the Year in 1999, 2006 and 2012. Hulse taught physical education for 40 years in the Olathe school district.

 

Chris Kaufman, Winfield (Posthumously) – Official
The officiating fraternity in Kansas has its group of pioneers and Chris Kaufman is right up front. A registered official for 40 years, Kaufman left a lasting impression on those that knew him. Kaufman officiated football, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. During his time, he worked in 22 state football championships, 24 state basketball tournaments and 46 state baseball tournaments. In addition to state championships, he worked 43 postseason football games and 57 substate basketball tournaments. Kaufman was instrumental in leadership for officials, serving for 20 years as a KSHSAA Area Supervisor and for 14 years served as the commissioner for the South-Central Boarder League. He was inducted in the Greater Wichita Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2016. Kaufman was twice named official of the year in Kansas, football in 1996 and baseball in 2012. In 2006, Chris was awarded with the NFHS Active Official Award, given to one official in the country annually.

 

Francine Martin, Topeka - Administrator
Francine Martin set a standard for quality leadership in interscholastic activities. This was recognized in 2022 when Martin was awarded two NFHS Citations Awards, one for state association service and one for service towards officiating. During her 19-year tenure with the KSHSAA, Martin was responsible for the administration of basketball, cross country, baseball, and softball programs as well as with the KSHSAA Coaching School, KIAAA liaison, and officials’ administration. From 2010-2013, Francine served on the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee and then in 2018 she was asked to serve again, this time as chair of the committee. She became the first female to serve in that role. Martin served on the KSHSAA Executive Board and Board of Directors from 1997-2002. Before she joined the KSHSAA in 2004, Martin was a school administrator, coach and teacher at Topeka-Seaman, El Dorado and La Crosse

 

David Shelly, Wichita – Faculty
David Shelly went a perfect 27 of 27 during his time as scholars bowl coach at Wichita East. During his leadership, the Aces qualified for the KSHSAA State Scholars Bowl Championship 27 times. Shelly’s scholars bowl teams won five 6A KSHSAA State Scholars Bowl Championships. Shelly was dedicated to making scholars bowl better in the state of Kansas. He served on the Executive Board of KASBC (Kansas Association of Scholars Bowl Coaches) and created and edited content for KSHSAA postseason tournaments nearly every year of his career. In 2018 he was recognized by Wichita Public Schools with the Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award. At East, Shelly was the longtime sponsor of the Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society; sponsored the Water Polo Club, Irish Dance Club, and serves as a debate and forensics judge, as well as several roles within the IB program.

 

Roger Timken, Manhattan – Student

The standout from Cimarron, Roger Timken was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track. The highlight of Roger’s career was at the 1966 State Track and Field Championship. In that meet, Timken single handedly won the Class “B” State Championship for Cimarron. He placed first in the 220-yard dash, the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180 low hurdles, giving Cimarron 18 points to capture the team title - two points ahead of the second-place team. Both hurdle performances were as records for the meet. The mayor of Cimarron later proclaimed May 28, 1966, “Roger Timken Day.” During his senior year, Timken recorded times of 14 seconds in the 120-yard-high hurdles, 18.4 in the 180-yard low hurdles and 20.9 in the 220-yard dash. Timken was part of two undefeated football seasons that went 9-0 in 1963 and 1964. During his senior year of basketball, Timken averaged 19 points per game and was a first team all-state selection.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the Kansas State High School Activities Association offices, 601 SW Commerce Place in Topeka and is open Monday–Friday during business hours (directions at www.kshsaa.org).  The Hall of Fame is also available via the KSHSAA “Gallery of Champions” at http://www.kshsaachamps.org/.

 

The honorees were chosen from nominations reviewed by a selection committee.  To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, an individual must have made an unusually outstanding contribution in interschool activities, either as a student with exceptional talent, or as an adult working with youth (such as an activity coach, director or sponsor, an administrator, an official or a contributor).  Hall of Fame inductees may no longer be active in the field for which they are nominated (exception: contributor with over 30 years of outstanding service).

 

Each year schools and communities throughout Kansas submit many nominations of individuals who have made tremendous contributions in the field of interschool activities. Hall of Fame information is available on the KSHSAA website at www.kshsaa.org. Nomination forms are available by contacting the KSHSAA.  Any nominations to be considered for induction in 2025 must be submitted prior to November 1, 2024.
