Campus combo spurring resurgence

Prior to this season’s tipoff, Campus was already hyped as one of the top teams in the state, despite winning just seven games last season.

Although they possessed a talented roster, the Colts were fairly young and simply didn’t have many games go their way. But given the senior duo of Andrell Burton and Kaason Thomas headlining a now experienced supporting cast, it appeared they had the ability to vault far past their 2022-23 result heading into this season.

To those who made that prediction, you were spot on.

Here's our best guess at the rankings after significant team and schedule research as well as consultation with coaches and media from across the state. A reminder, this is just for fun. Fortunately, sub-state and state tournaments will determine who the best team is in each classification in March and not rankings.

*Games Thursday night have likely already impacted these rankings and we've added a few notes about those results, and a mention of Friday night's key games, below each corresponding classification.

Life comes full circle sometimes. When it happens in the great fraternity of Kansas high school football coaches, it can take on a whole new meaning.

Longtime Kansas high school football coaching giants Ken Stonebraker and Chuck Porter will be inducted this December in the Kansas Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. A culmination of years of molding young men into men after their paths first crossed in early 1985.

He wasn’t just a football coach for 34 years to hundreds and hundreds of football players.
Chuck Porter, as one former player described it, was a father figure to him.

“Last summer a young man from the (Wichita) East High team of 1982 contacted us to let Chuck know of his love and gratefulness that he was his Coach,” Chuck’s wife of nearly 50 years Schari Porter said. “And also a father figure to him since he did not have a father in his life.”

Finch family business

Smith Center senior Dakota Kattenberg notched a major career milestone when she hit the 1,000 career points scored mark in her team’s Tuesday victory over Hoxie, a consistent level of production that few high school basketball players ever come close to.

But Kattenberg, who has helped lead the Lady Redmen to a 13-2 record, is not the first in her gene pool to see success on the court.
