Week 2 football rankings

Wichita Northwest is playing like the best team in all classes this season combining an explosive offense with a frenetic defense and dudes on dudes. (Photo: Linda Gregory) Note: Linda Gregory has contributed outstanding photos to our publications and website frequently over the years. Kansas Pregame staff was saddened to hear of her passing and we send out our deepest condolences to her family and the Northwest community.

Week 2 helped clear some things up for us in our personal Top 5 for each classification. The returning champs in each classification continue to look the part of title defenders in spite of our concerns entering the season, and a few new contenders are starting to make some noise. Let’s take a closer look.

Rankings after Week 1

Sylvan-Lucas has nearly 40 players out for 8-Man football after gaining a number of students following the Wilson school closure and the Mustangs looks like an 8-Man II contender after a hard-fought win over a much-improved Lincoln team Friday night. (Photo: Lori Spear)

Friday night left us with more questions than answers, which is the way it should be, parity is good for high school sports. It’s great for kids across the state to truly believe they have a chance to help their team win a state title, and in our estimation more teams than ever have a legitimate shot to challenge for the top spot in their respective classifications, however, the defending champions in most classifications appear more well-equipped to repeat than we originally thought.

Week 1 surprises

Because I publish a preview magazine the first thing I do as the scores start rolling in is evaluate my own predictions for each game. I generally think about games with the question, “What is the most unlikely scenario to happen?” Below, find a few of the most surprising games to me from Week 1 and look for our updated rankings by the end of the weekend.

Preseason rankings are a guessing game, perhaps now more than ever given the increased frequency of student-athlete transfers in the offseason, but it's fun to try and predict who is going to finish the season on top.

As a former coach, I'm a little conflicted about producing preseason rankings. I can tell you definitively that players can be impacted by what's written and reported about them. Different teams have differing abilities to meet or exceed expectations.
