McPherson hosts third annual Girls Wrestling State Tournament

McPherson edged Fort Scott 113 to 110 to win the third annual unofficial girls wrestling championship in McPherson on Saturday. With more than 200 wrestlers from nearly 80 different schools in attendance the event has grown substantially in just three years, and now it appears the sport could be sanctioned by the Kansas State High School Activities Association with an approval vote planned for April.

Kansas Pregame coverboy Zane Colson is one of the top football players and wrestlers in all of Kansas. Thursday he made his commitment to compete in both sports collegiately at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.

The Rock Hills product rushed for almost 1,500 yards and 24 touchdowns last fall and is currently in an undefeated wrestling season as part of a wrestling co-op with Beloit.

He rushed for over 4,000 yards in his high school football career and is a three-time state qualifier as a wrestler.

Maddy Amsink and Julie Bachard, members of the Cheney High School cross country team, have been selected to receive the KSHSAA "Spirit of Sport" award for their selfless act at the regional meet in 2018. The award recognizes the values inherent in high school sports beyond winning and losing.
 
KSHSAA Executive Director, Bill Faflick, invited all member high schools to submit the name of an individual, coach or team demonstrating such qualities.

Wednesday, February 6th, was National Signing Day. The first day in the new year where college seniors can sign their National Letter of Intent to play collegiately. The new early signing period in December has reduced the number of commitments that are made on the traditional NSD, but dozens of recruits across the state still affirm their college choice on the traditional signing day, many with exciting ceremonies attended by family and friends.

Andover Central driven by scoring triple-threat

The Andover Central Jaguars are the top team in Division II of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League, from top-to-bottom one of the best conferences in the state. The AV-CTL features teams like Maize, Campus, Newton and Salina Central at the top of Division I, Ark City, Eisenhower and Maize South trailing the Jags at the top of Division II, perennial power McPherson at the top of Division III and Andale and Wichita Collegiate continuing their success in Division IV.

KFBCA welcomes largest clinic crowd ever

Nearly 300 coaches gathered in Wichita Friday, February 1st and Saturday, February 2nd to hear from high school and college coaches from across Kansas and the Midwest. The annual event kicked off Friday evening with keynote speakers Chris Klieman (Kansas State University head coach), Les Miles (University of Kansas head coach) and Matt Campbell (Iowa State University head coach). The three Big 12 head coaches spoke to a packed house.

The Harlem Globetrotters will return to Salina and this time they will have a hometown hero on the team – Hannah “Mighty” Mortimer.

As the 17th female player in the team’s 92-year history, Mortimer has wowed fans near and far with her ball handling skills, energetic playing style and hustle. She will be welcomed back to Salina as a full-fledged member of the World-Famous Harlem Globetrotters on Monday, February 4th at 7 pm at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

Piper High School’s Ryan Cobbins gives back to her community in more ways than just basketball.

She is among the top players in the state of Kansas. The four-year starter has eclipsed 1,000 points in her career and has earned All-State honors her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons. 

According to Cobbins, her nomination as a McDonald’s All-American is the accomplishment she’s most proud of, and even though she wasn't selected she says the nomination is an acknowledgement of her work thus far.
